Importantly, the conceptual parallel with Ai Weiwei’s work is also reflected in the process: what appears to be a simple, everyday object is in fact the result of meticulous handcraft. Each seed is individually formed, finished, and detailed, with its surface pattern applied by hand, making every element unique.
In the present iteration, created for the New York-based Fragment Gallery and presented in Hong Kong, the project returns closer to its original source of inspiration. The seeds are reimagined in a form much closer to the Chinese prototypes — larger, fuller in volume, and with a smoother, more oval silhouette, echoing the porcelain seeds that initiated the project.
The project originally drew inspiration from Ai Weiwei’s iconic installation “Sunflower Seeds,” composed of millions of handcrafted porcelain seeds produced in Jingdezhen — the historic center of Chinese porcelain. Each seed, individually shaped and painted, reflects both mass production and individuality, referencing the Cultural Revolution era, when sunflower seeds were a ubiquitous everyday object in China and a subtle symbol of collective identity.
This work became the starting point for Anna Minakova’s jewellery collection “Seeds,” first created in 2017. In its initial chapter, the concept was translated into a Russian context: the seeds were reinterpreted through the form and character of varieties native to Russia — generally smaller and distinctly different in shape, with a more tapered, pointed silhouette compared to their Chinese counterparts. This led to the creation of an extensive jewellery collection, including sautoirs, bracelets, and earrings, executed both in gold with diamonds and in silver.
It marks a completed circle while opening a new chapter in the evolving narrative of “Seeds.”
